Advantages Of Homeschooling

What makes homeschooling better than traditional schooling? Lately, there is a rising trend in families choosing to homeschool their child than send their child to a traditional educational institution.

Let's look at some of the benefits of homeschooling over traditional schooling:

1. Flexible Schedule

Homeschooling enables a flexible schedule. For example, the child does not need to wake up at 7 every morning. With homeschooling, your child can start homeschooling at 9am or later depending on your preferred schedule. You can schedule your child's homeschooling education as you see fit with materials or subjects that may be not available in a traditional school.

You can tailor the homeschool curriculum to suit the needs and interest of your child.

2. Individual attention

In a traditional school setting, thirty to forty students are assigned to a teacher in class. Therefore usually, the teacher cannot devote 100 percent attention to any child since it will not be fair to the other children. Plus, it is quite impossible to provide individual attention to all students.

With homeschooling, your child gets all the individual attention he/she needs. For example, if your child is weak in mathematics, you could devote more time and energy into teaching mathematics.

Your child's homeschooling schedule can be adjusted to crater for that. For example, if your child is better at science than at mathematics, simple devote more homeschooling hours to mathematics and cut back on science. With homeschooling, the choice is yours. Traditional schools can't do that.

3. Family Activity

The schooling of the child can become an extended family activity. Examples are field trips and experiments. Plus, the child also receives more quality time with his/her parents. There is more time for family bonding. The child is also free of any negative peer pressure or influences.

4. No peer pressure

With homeschooling, the child does not need to prove his/her abilities to other children. Parents are able to deeply understand their child better with homeschooling and therefore are able to plan the learning program according to his strengths and weakness.

Parents can also change the curriculum to suit the learning style of the child. For example, some children learn better from reading while others need to write. Some children even learn better from experiencing or seeing things in action.

5. Religion Learning

Religious learning is a sensitive issue hence most traditional schools shunned it. However, with homeschooling, parents can take control over the moral and religious learning of the child. Parents can impart their ideologies and deep beliefs into the child rather than let the school dictate what moral and religious education the child will be receiving.

Homeschooling is the best way to educate a child as you can see from the advantages listed below. If you have the time, the interest and the ability, why not give it a try?

Planning Your Teaching
By: Christopher Byrnes

Home schooling can be a lot of fun, especially for parents and children who are sick and tired of the traditional way of educating a person in a typical public or private school.

However, it does not necessarily mean that when you opt to home school your children, you can do whatever you want to do and teach your child whatever you want to teach.

Just like the typical method of teaching in schools, home schooling is also a process that parents should learn to understand in order to provide their children the best education that they could give.

Therefore, for parents who have decided to home school their children and do not know how to prepare an overall plan in order to come up with the best structure in teaching their children, here is a list of some tips that you need to know:

1. Know your benefits

It is important to know the benefits and the reasons why you opted to home school.

If you know that you and your child can get more benefits in home schooling than the usual type of schooling, then it would be easier for you to pattern your teaching to the things that you and your child will both enjoy.

2. Create a goal and devise some motivations

It would be better if you create your goals first. Try to identify what you want to achieve for your children and for yourself as well. In this way, you will be kept focused and inspired throughout the process. You have your goals as your guide in creating the necessary teaching approach that your children need.

3. Make a budget

Most parents tend to think that since home schooling provides a cheaper means of educating their children, it's okay for them to buy the best books available even if it would cost them a lot.

Indeed, home schooling materials are important in order to come up with the best teaching approach. However, it does not necessarily mean that you have to overindulge with the items.

Try to set a budget for your home schooling program. There are many items on the Internet that could help you come up with the best strategies and methods without having to spend a lot of money.

4. Identify your child's capacity to learn and the way he learns things

Although there are many home schooling programs and methods available on the market today, nothing can come close to perfection in providing your child the best education if you do not know how to employ the method to your child. You can only do this easily if you know the learning style of your child.

It's best to identify the level of curiosity and interest of your child in order to come up with the best teaching approach that would motivate him or her to learn things.

One of the reasons why most children do not excel in school is because the approach to their interest and level of curiosity is sometimes inappropriate. Hence, it's best to focus on this aspect.

5. Have constant communication with your children

In this way, you will be able to identify the things that bother them most and the areas that need improvement. The problem with most parents is that they are so focused on providing their children the best education when in fact, the best education that they could give is when they learn to listen to their children's wants and from there provide them all the things that they need.

Most parents tend to forget that the very essence of learning is based on what their children needs to know. Most parents have the propensity to push the things that they think would provide the best education for their children.

In turn, the children end up miserable because there are things that they need, but were not provided simply because their parents failed to identify those things.

The difference of teaching approach in home schooling compared to the usual method used in the typical school is that teaching should focus more on the child's individual interest, learning style, and the ability to understand everything he or she has to learn. It is only through this way that they can best master the things they need to learn in this world.

Starting A Homeschool

You've finally taken the leap and are ready to start homeschooling. The only question is how do you start? Don't be intimidated by the thought of starting a homeschool. You don't need a lot of expensive tools to homeschool, especially if your child is in kindergarten. To get started you will need to do three basic things: organize your home and homeschool, organize a planner for your curriculum and organize a schedule for yourself.

Many parents will find the most important aspect of running a homeschool is organization! There are many books and places on the Internet that will help you find the right forms to plan your schedule. There may be a few bumps in the road until you find a schedule that works for you. Starting a homeschool may seem overwhelming at first but the benefits outweigh the risks.

The number one thing parents seem to have trouble with is organizing the homeschool. You will need a central location to keep all of your school supplies so that you know where they are when you need them. A great way to store these items is a shelf with storage bins or a large cabinet that has four or five shelves. Additionally you will need a file cabinet to keep your child's work so you will be ready when record check time comes.

The rest of the supplies that you will need to keep you organized include a calendar with plenty of room to write, a day planner if you have so many activities that you can't keep track of them and finally a school planner for all of your child's curriculum information and activities. Many of the items you will need are easily found at large retail stores and are inexpensive. The planner for your curriculum is your guidebook to success. If you think you are overwhelmed now, imagine a month from now when you have no idea what you've done or what you should do next.

Running a homeschool requires planning, and plenty of it. Your teaching style may be eclectic but don't be sloppy when it comes to organizing your child's curriculum. As for buying the curriculum, don't buy it until you need it. Packaged curriculums are fine if you think you can't come up with your own ideas or you are new to the homeschooling routine. Many parents find that as they continue the homeschooling program year after year they become more comfortable with creating their own curriculums.

Schedule time for yourself and time for the whole family. Many new homeschooling parents forget to schedule time for other things when they are starting a homeschool. Purchase a planner or download one from the Internet to help you schedule effectively. Include your
